The Alaskan Huskies are primarily known for pulling sleds. These dogs are not recognized by the AKC as pure breed dogs, They are a mixture of several dogs like hounds, pointers. There are no true facts on how these dogs came about. Some breeders say that they were products of docile wolves. Others say that they were brought by travelers who came to Alaska by shipping boats. These dogs were used to pull sleds from one Alaskan Village to another. This is the reason why these dogs were considered as working dogs and this is what made them so famous.
Alaskan Huskies are bigger than their Siberian counterparts. They are slimmer in built than the Siberian Huskies. Their thick coats can come in any varied combination of colors. This is because these dogs are considered more of a general category than a breed. These dogs can have one eye that is brown and the other one is blue. Their eyes can also be of one color and it is usually brown. These dogs are the best when it comes to sprint and sled racing competition. Most of the Alaskan Huskies have pointed ears and tails that curls over their backs. Their vision is extraordinary and their noses are strong because the vision of hounds are included in their genetics. They are not good in swimming or retrieving. These dogs are high jumpers and they can jump as much as 6 feet in a sitting position.
The Alaskan Huskies are faithful but independent minded dogs. These dogs will not be by your side, if you let them out of their leashes. Remember that these dogs are adventurers by heart. It is best for you to keep them leashed when you go on daily long walks . Owners must do this because these dogs can dop a lot mischief if they are not properly exercised. They are used to doing hard work. Owners must be firm but act calmly when dealing with these dogs. Owners must show that they are the pack leaders. These dogs must walk by their sides or at the backs of their owners. Changing their routine activities will work well with them. They like car rides and going out with the family. Owners must spend a lot of time with these dogs because they like to be in the company of people.
These dogs will not do well living in apartments. Take precautions when these dogs are doing their exercises in warm weather. Alaskan Huskies love the cold weather. These dogs will do better in homes that have large yards. Make sure that the fences are at least higher than 6 feet in height and are built firmly. Owners must place wires at the base of their fences because these dogs are known for their digging abilities.
Alaskan Huskies are known to live for 12 – 15 years.
The females will give birth to at least 4 puppies.
Alaskan huskies are known to have few health problems.
Give these dogs a bath only when it becomes necessary. These dogs do a lot of self cleaning and this is the reason that they do not exhibit bad odor.You can comb their hair using metal combs. They are heavy shedders and they shed twice a year.
