The Joyful Otterhound

Otterhound Love

Otterhounds were bred for hunting out otters. Otters were considered to be partial aquatic mammals who hunted down fish. To form these type of dogs, they needed to breed bloodhounds with different types of dogs that were used for hunting until they got the right type of species. Using these dogs made it easier for fishermen to catch fish. These aquatic mammals started to decrease and so did the otterhounds. This happened during the 1900's. Something had to be done about it. In 1978, strict measures were done so that these type of dogs will not be non – existent. There was a group of breeders who took up the cudgels in order that the population of these dogs would increase. They were said to have possibly originated in France. It is hard to find these type of dogs because there are not so many of them. They are now not facing extinction.. These dogs can track racoons, bears and minks. Their sense of smell is tremendous

The hair of these dogs are ragged and rather thickset. Otterhounds have rectangular shaped bodies and square like heads. Their muzzles are quite long. Their noses are dark and their nostrils are large. They have teeth that have been enjoined in scissor like bites. Their eyes are dee  p setted and the color of their eyes reflects the color of their coats. Dogs who possess darker rims have eyes that are dark. Otterhounds with dark bluish gray coats have light golden brown eyes. They have long ears that can touch the top of their nose. These dogs have ears that are folded and hanging freely. Their necks are sturdy and it reaches all the way to it's wide shoulders. They have tails that are set at a high level, becoming thinner at it's base point. Their feet are shaped in a rounded way and are located at the bottom of their long legs. It is entwined together with hair that is rough. Otterhounds have outer coats that have bristly, unrefined and thick. The appearance of their coats are distorted.. They have dense
and shaggy eyebrows. The colors of their coats are the same when you compare them to the colors of other hounds.

Otterhounds have nice characters. They are friendly and happy dogs. They are smart, loving and they do rely on themselves. Besides that, they can make decisions on their own. They make good companions because they are quiet. They like to run around and are known to sniff a lot. Otterhounds have loud voices but it's quite pleasing to the ear. These types of dogs seldom bark. There are times you can hear their snoring. They are brave and faithful dogs. They are good dogs that even children will like. Any owner of these dogs will treasure them because they are good companions. Owners must be the pack leaders because if they do not have a strong will, these dogs can take advantage of them. Always be in command but also be loving toward these dogs.

Dogs of these type will reach heights of 24 - 26 inches. They can weigh as much as 66 – 115 pounds. Their lifespan is about 10 – 12 years.

Otterhounds are prone to having sicknesses like: hip dysplasia, thrombocytopenia ( immune system disorder ), hemophilia, elbow dysplasia and bloat. Do not overfeed these dogs because they can gain unwanted weight. These dogs are not suited to live in apartments because they need a lot of space to exercise. They must be allowed to roam around in big yards that have been properly fenced. They can adapt to mild and cool climates but they must be given appropriate shelter. These kind of hounds must be able to walk with their owners. Just keep in mind, that owners are the boss and these dog must walk by their side or at their backs. This way, you are showing them, that as owners you are the leaders.

Take care of these dogs and they will love you till their last breath.

The Strong English Mastiff Dogs

These dogs were brought by the early Phoenicians to England during the 6th century. They were mainly traders from a country that is now known as Lebanon. These people were from the northern part of that area. Dogs of this kind were very useful in attracting bears and bulls. They were very useful in guarding sheep and at times their owners would use them for dog fighting competitions. Dog experts say that they are the oldest breed of English dogs. There have been drawings of these dogs that were done by Egyptians in the year 3000 B.C. They protected their owners from wolves. They were almost non existent after world war 2. Dog lovers in England had to buy these dogs from Canada and the USA. They started to breed them and after that their population started to grow once again.
English Mastiffs are large, with square heads that are quite wide. They do have nicely spotted spots amidst their two eyes. The muzzles are ½ less in measurements when you compare it to their heads. The colors of their eyes are brown dark hazel eyes. The size of their eyes are proportionate. The eyes of these dogs are set quite a from each other. Black masks are rather noticeable around them.Their noses are dark. Their small ears are like the letter v, darkly colored. The shape of their ears are proportionate to the size of their heads. They have teeth that have been enjoined and have scissor like bites. It does not mean that dogs that have undershot bites cannot compete in competition. They can be admitted in competitions as long their teeth do not show when their mouths ar closed. The tails of these dogs can go rather high. Their bases are quite broad and it starts to be hazy upon reaching the joints of their back legs. Their coat colors are rather attractive: yellowish pink, golden and light fawn, silver, tiger. At time the color is gray and tawny

Mastiffs are powerful dogs. If you don't watch out they can be so dominant. Not all mastiffs are like this. They are big but very amiable dogs. These dogs seldomly bark but they will defend the people that are close to them. They could be very good guard dogs. Since they are heavy, these dogs can push any person entering your homes and frighten them. They can just lay down on them and they won't be able to get up because of their sheer weight. They are confident and they have a keen sense on what is happening around their vicinity. They are good for  older children and they can be their best companions.. They are intelligent, loving, non temperamental and obedient dogs. You can train them but please do it in a peaceful but meaningful way. Do not change your ways when you are with them. Act confident and be undeviating in your ways. Always communicate with your dogs. You should be the master and they should be part of your pack. Owners must be the pack leaders. These dogs drool, wheeze and snore a lot

These dogs are prone to sicknesses like hip dysplasia. CHD and this can affect the hip bones of younger dogs. They can also develop sicknesses like gastric torsion, ectropion, PPM ( These are little white spots in the dog's eyes ), They can also develop cardiomyopathy..

Dogs of these kind can live in apartments but they must have a lot of space for them to run around. They can also roam around in your backyards but you must make sure that your yard is properly fenced. This way, they cannot escape. If you own one of these dogs, they must go out with you everyday for long walks.. This will bring out their energies and it can be physical or mental. They must walk by your side or at the back of you. They should know that you are the leader.

The heights of male dogs are usually 30 inches and the females are 27 inches. The male dogs weight is usually around 160 pounds and the females are 150 pounds.

You can groom their short hair coats and it is easy to do it. Use a steady and solid bristle brushes. Use a
clean cloth when wiping their coat. Give them a bath and shampoo only when they need to. Once a week would just be fine

These dogs need your tender loving care. By doing this they will remain loyal to you.

Winniechurchill's News Report

Hey folks, Winniechurchill is hoping to get a job as a dog reporter. Hope you like her first newsreel.

Princess Kate’s mom, Carole Middleton, Rescues Dog

Kate Middleton’s mom, Carole Middleton recently rescued the dog of her neighbor, Basia Hamilton, who is a royal portrait painter. Hamilton’s dog was missing and Carole Middleton drove around and found it. She checked the dog tag to make sure it was really Hamilton’s before taking the dog back home.

Beware of bad Humans in the “Dog Flipping” Business

A new business going around is dog flipping. Dogs are either lost or stolen by bad humans, then listed on Craigslist for sale. Sometimes dog flippers will see a notice about a lost dog that is looking for its humans. The bad dog flippers will show up, claim the dog is theirs, and the next day sell the dog online. They can get as much as $250 per dog. Humans, if you love your dog, you can microchip us. If we get lost it shouldn’t cost you more than $10 to get us back. Please?

Humans Charged With Child Endangerment, But what about the Dog?

A couple was charged with child endangerment in Pennsylvania for letting their child ride in the back of a pickup truck – in a cage with the dog. A lot of people were surprised and took photos and put the photos online, that’s how the mother, Abbey Carlson, 29, and her boyfriend, Thomas Fishinger, were caught.
Here's a video of what happened:

The humans admitted it was bad judgment to let their 10-year-old daughter ride in a dog cage with the dog in the back of the pickup. They allowed it because the daughter wanted to because she heard the dog crying.
In Pennsylvania there are laws against a child under 18 riding in the back of an open pickup truck. But are there any similar laws for dogs?

Human surrenders to authorities but won’t give up his dog

A dog bit a woman three times in one month. As a result, the court ordered its human, Jeremiah Aguilar, to turn the dog, named Dutch, in. The dog was ordered by the court to be euthanized. Aguilar refused to turn over Dutch and said Dutch was provoked by the woman. He also appealed the court ruling to euthanize Dutch. Aguilar also refused to turn Dutch over to animal control. A new court hearing is scheduled for June 6.

Endangered whale species sold as dog snacks

We aren’t fussy eaters. But environmentalists got mad when a Japanese businessman sold endangered whale meat as exotic pet food. There is a ban on capturing these whales, but sometimes they do it in Japan secretly, and it’s openly done in Iceland. The dog treats are sold to rich businessman as fin whale that comes from Iceland. Environmentalists got mad and said these endangered whale species shouldn’t be used to make dog treats. The Japanese businessman pulled the treats out as a result of this. We’re glad, we think all animal species deserve a chance for preservation. Besides, we have tasted some terrific dog cupcakes and we think they probably taste much better.

Well, that wraps up my news report for today. Hope I did a good job:) Bark if you think I did, and growl if you think I need improvement.

Manny Pacquiao trains his dog, Pacman -- and vice versa

Manny Pacquiao has a Jack Russell Terrier that he named Pacman. Pacman is his running companion when Manny jogs around Los Angeles’ trails and streets. Pacman is a pretty fast runner, and it’s not easy keeping up with him. Because of this, you could say that Manny Paquiao’s Pacman doubles as his trainer.
Pacquiao likes to teach his dog tricks. The usual “sit,” “lie down,” and “shake hands,” but he has yet to get the dog to stop chasing squirrels. Pacman also travels to the Philippines with Manny, and goes to Las Vegas when Manny has fights. I guess you could say this is a well traveled pet.
