Understanding Your Dogs As They Get Old

By: Ed Gonzalez

Dogs are just like humans and their behavioral patterns changes when have been living for so many years..W hen they are old, the way they function and reciprocate matters changes . Dogs in their geriatric stage wake up in the middle of the night and they start to howl. Others, can cause accidents to happen in your homes. Some dogs will wake up suddenly to urinate or to drink. You do not need to be alarmed when these things happen. These things do happen because your dog is getting old.

When people get old they lose their memories and tend to be forgetful. When dogs reach their golden ages, they may lose some of their cognitive functions. Others may lose a a lot. This is referred to as Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome ( CDS ).It is a condition that dog owners must know about. Their life expectancies are longer than most animals which makes them more susceptible to diseases.

If ever your dogs are showing signs of CDS, there are common signs that your dogs will display and this will help you know if they have acquired this specific syndrome already.

Your dogs will not be able to learn any new trick you teach them and they may be forgetful of the old tricks that you have taught them. They will not remember the commands that thyt have learned before. Male or female dogs dogs may not remember your handshake command. At this stage, never get mad at your dogs. Do not think they are just acting or that they don't like you. You must not shout at them. They are like people who get old and become forgetful. At times they may think that you are teaching them a new command and they cannot grasp the meaning of it. You must be more understanding at this point.

When Dogs are suffering from Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome ( CDS ), they may stare at you blankly. They may also exhibit a a fixed type of look while staring at a particular object or even a wall.  This is done with their eyes wide open. Other canine dogs will run after a thing that is not in existence or bark without reason at an empty space. If you do notice this kind of behavior, you must take your dog to the vet for a checkup. He or she may be suffering from neurological disorders.

They may be in a state of bewilderment and they may not recognize you. Some dogs will growl at their owners because they cannot identify them. These dogs will give you the “cold shoulder treatment” and others will be rather timid. Of course, this can be quite disappointing for dog owners because they have seen how active, playful and loving their dogs were before.

Just remember to give these dogs all the love you can and be patient with them. They have entertained you, gave you warmth all these years. Now is the time for you to show how much you love and care for them. Give them the best treatment possible.

Dogs are just like human, aren't they? We share the same life cycle. May be that's why they are the man's best friends.

Thank you so much for this information. Two of my three dogs are old now, but still in pretty good shape, fortunately.
